The only thing that puts me off this unit, is that the 3870 is not close enough on performance to the 8800GTS which is the core rumoured to be in nvidia's 9800 GX2.

Although if it's half the price it could represent really good value.

Not sure if the proposed 2GB of video ram brings any real benefits though?

Good question when are they coming out - I heard somewhere between August and October this year and £400 a card.

In this industry the best of the best is a 6 month cycle, so, if we all thought like that we'd never buy anything  AMD will need to launch there's sonner I suspect, mainly due to the gap between current flgaships and the 8800GTS even a dual slot card will (probably) be upstaged by the nvidia offering (2x 3870's Vs 2x 8800GTS's).

But the point is that this will be the best of the best available at the time - which means you can bench it and still use for all your games for a good two years.

The 7950GX2 is only now starting to show its age - but it will still keep up with 8800GTX in 70% of DX9 games.

Of all the cards that will be available at time of launch this is the dual GPU Cards will have longevity.

Finally - it presents the opportunity for us to get the most from non SLI based systems - that is to say you wont need expensive SLI or crossfire
boards to run it and get some uber scores in.

It does look like a beast and could be fun to mod with those two cores!

anyone know if their are plans for a waterblock for it?

There are always plans for a waterblock ;) - usually the first ones that come out are not as good as they sould be - having said that one would assume they have all learnt from the GX2 adventures - haven't they? :)
