Ive currently got 2 raptors, but im about to start a new project, and was wondering if 6 in raid 0 would be quicker? would it depend on my raid card also?
many thanks

It would be a hell of a lot quicker, just (like you said though) depends on your raid card, find out what speed it'll run at.

well what if its onboard? that would take out the limitation of the pci bus?
Would the added latency reduce it?
Thanks

wow alot of noise :)

lol i was thinking the same i cna't even stand the noise my 2 make

oh, i can barely hear myn :)
So what do you think? try onboard raid or use a card?

LOL yeah i had one that was bad enough.

Have a read through this http://www.nextlevelhardware.com/storage/battleship/ its from the SSD thread further down this forum, but I think it might apply to you with 6 drives, something to do with the limited processing power of the adapter or something????

Looks like 2 is plenty then, anything more begins to slow down. Well i might just get 3 lots of 300gb raptorness if i end up getting them all :)

Have you thought about setting them up in matrix raid.

6 on the onboard would be very fast, it uses the PCIe 4x interface, i get burst speeds of over 3.5GBPS with just 2 raptors, the interface is capable of over 500MBPS sustained, 6 raptors would get around 350-400

My 4 were amazing

well i read an article saying that more actually slows it down, but would you guys (i guess you would know with the extremes you goto) say that 4 or even 6 are faster than 2?

it depends on how u run them tbh, if u have a good raid card more is better but on a mobo sometimes more can slow it down so 3 is premium

however runnign 6 in raid 0 with a 40gb boot slice is quick

i think 3 sounds good :) 2 lots of raid :)

I use 4 in RAID on PCMARK and alike - Works well, epscially if set-up correctly with an I-Ram :d

i use 5 drives... would i see any improvement with only 4?

Dunno - unfortunately I dont have 5 drives of same make/size/cache to use.

But if (like me) you use the onboard RAID controller(s) I am sure the CPU overhead and saturation of the bus versus the array advantage would be fully stretched and (more than likely) show a reduction in performance.

I am a big fan of the larger 32mb cache 500gb drives from Seagate though - the larger cache could offset the performance hit of the bus restriction and cpu overhead - I just dont have £80 x5 to try it out...... and am still waiting for seagate to call me :)

lol :D
ive collected my drives over a few months, allways the same ones, had to rma a few aswell.......

so knocking it down to 4 would help then... migh give it a go on next reinsall.

Mine should be here this week, cheers pete ;) Im going to setup all 4 using the on-board controller. I'll have some time to play as my phase won't be here till next week..

I'll try and do a few HDtach benchies at the weekend with 1 drive non RAID and then 2, 3 and 4 drives in RAID0. I was going to have a dedicated swap file on my current 74Gb raptor... reckon this will see a benefit

That'd be great if you could, as then we would be able to see how the performance scales with each additional drive :)

More HD's you have in raid on the Intel SB chipset your better off using a matrix Boot raid setup. I found huge huge gains with it.

4 is kinda max you'd want to go really

2 will do nicely

If you have the cash for 4+ then go SSD with 2 drives. The ICH9 will not hanndle the speed of them sadly and a fix is on the way but it's fastest thing out and can be afforedable.

You can still get the iRAM - I just received the drive version from Hong Kong off eBay. The SSD drives are also available as Pete has said, partly cheaper as Dell are now offering them in their laptops (eg: XMS M1330) ;)

will SSD's be a lot faster than raptors? how would they compare to Iram?
