Their new mobos will be up against X48, their GPUs will be up against the 3870X2 which will already have some kind of foothold.

ATI have a chance to make some money, although there will be price-gouging on e-tailers part I suspect.

Overall, I think this is good. nVidia could use a bit of a kicking to get them back on their toes, although its a bit odd that they kicked themselves through choice....

I can see nvidias' reason for delaying the 790i chipset. This is because they want to sell as many of the the 780i boards as possible before rejigging the SLi market. This is bad for the consumer considering the 780i chipset is awesomely overpriced for what is a negligible speed increase over the 680i. In terms of the 9800GX2 I think nvidia are fairly confident that the Ati card price/performance is less than that of say 2*3870XTs and 2*8800GTs. So they won't lose much market share by delaying releases till March.

aren't ATI notorious for paper launches though? not much stock available?

Whether or not a product is a paper launch is based on the competitors situation.

e.g For ATI, if nVidia already have a card out, they'll paper launch so when people look back and reflect, they see the least amount of time difference between product launches. Likewise for nVidia (e.g 8800GT selling out everywhere and the subsequent retailer price gouging).

Granted ATI have been on the back foot for a while now (since the X1800/X1900 delays).
