To say Im Pi***d off with OCZ doesn't even come close!:@
After my 2nd Set of Flex PC2-9200 has packed up and refuses to even pass memtest at 800mhz 5-5-5-18, I think a change is in order...
Now, the memory needs to be able to do at least 970mhz, or ideally 1100ish.. I was thinking about the Corsair Domminators..
Has anybody got any experience with them on a P5k Premium mobo ?
Cheers,
Rich.

Crucial ballistix everyday.... what volts have you tried with the ram?

Hi mate,
I've tried them all... Kept it under 2.3v (correct for these sticks) but will not pass memtest at anything over 667mhz. I've even chucked 2.5v up them, but still no luck...
Crucial ballistix is also an option... The PC5300 versions, or go for the PC8500's... I've seen lots of reports of the £40 PC5300's going to 1100mhz 5-5-5-15

thats correct, myn are at 1111mhz stock volts :)
have you considered that it may be mobo?
also is that 667mhz in cpu-z?

You can get a good deal on the Ballistix direct from the Crucial website :)

I purchased soem ballistix PC5300 3-3-3-8 versions.
They clock up passed 650mhz, which is 1300mhz DDR ( 5-5-5-15 with 2.3v) :)

Its poss the mobo, its a bit picky with ram... I'll try them in my P5b.
Im tempted to go for the PC5300 version as i can get them for £44, and the PC8500 is £70+
I really want to go get them tomorrow thou, or i won't be able to try out my new kit this weekend :-(
Im just a bit wary about buying the PC5300's and knowing my luck they won't even do PC6400 speeds

Careful with the Ballistix, as I have read the new stuff doesn't use the D9 chips and doesn't clock nearly as well.

31-01-2008, 07:16 PM
You could always sell em.
TBH - I agree with you but the current chips found in ballistix PC5300 3-3-3-8 hook up nicely and most will do 1200mhz as a minimum with 2.3v. I know of 4 people here who have this ram and all of them do at least that speed.
Was not aware of the newer stick not having the D9's in - so take the opportunity to pay £53 plus delivery and buy some from overclockers who's stock (I believe) is all D9 stuff for now.

Ok, you've talked me into it.. :-)
Just to confirm, is it THESE (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-088-CR&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=144) as there listed as 3-3-3-12 ?
Cheers.

These are best bang for your £ in the UK at the mo

Transcend aXeRam, 5-5-5-15 @ 1200 as stock and a damn sight cheaper than anything else binned for those speeds.

Nice find - they look like a very well spec'd set of memory, especially when you take a read of the reviews :)

Couldn't resist, just ordered a set andy, should get them monday hopefully will let everyone know how they clock ;)
*edit* if i can push them to 1250 at those timings then thats equivalent to the PC-10000 dominators from corsair for about a quarter of the price :D

think i'll go nuts and try 2.55v @ 1350 as soon as i get them, see if it posts :D

Nice find Pooters.... I'll try the balistix first, as im inpatient and need them now... Look forward to seeing how they perform, may well upgrade at a later date..
Them heat spreaders look like they come from the corsair DTX series...

Go for it but i think these sticks might surprise us at lower volts than that.

I did indeed, they seemed to absorb all my abuse and performed effortlessly. I plan to swap them for a couple of yellow bits of cardboard when next i'm round ;)

96 mile round trip to OcUK this morning to pick up my new ram and first impressions are very good
Running memtest now at 5-5-5-12 1066mhz 2.2v. Seems to be breezing through.
I'll let ya know what my max freq is later.
Bargain of the year at £44 inc vat.
Thanks for the advice guys

Just a heads up really..... The OCZ Flex 1150's I was slagging off to the end of the earth the other day, were not in fact at fault
Dropped them into my P5b today, and they breezed through memtest at 5-5-5-12 1300mhz!!
5-4-4-12 1200mhz
4-4-4-10 1000mhz
or, even more impressive some might say...
3-3-3-4 @ 800Mhz 2.3v
Tis a bit of a bummer they don't like my P5k as them low latencies would be good for wprime :(

Very nice RAM, I'd be extremely pleased with them ratings :)

03-02-2008, 01:08 PM
i think the OCZ flex series were intended for 680i boards, had a few problems running them in my P5K but no probs on striker, opposite with ballistix, didnt like the striker but love the P5K. very weird i think, can the PCB make that much difference to which chipset the ram likes?
Teknokid
03-02-2008, 05:31 PM
What? ballistix love the striker, its an odd relationship, myn didnt reach 800mhz 2.2v, yet went to 940 on 2v....
I.L.P
03-02-2008, 06:29 PM
they're rated at 1066 though and i couldn't get them to run at that on my striker(s) (had 3 of them) none would run my ballistix at stock. however i could get OCZ 6400's to 1066 no problem, but they wouldnt do that on P35, tis very weird.
Teknokid
03-02-2008, 06:32 PM
ooh, more than 2 sticks on striker tops out at 940mhz... 2 sticks however....
I.L.P
03-02-2008, 06:36 PM
yeah 2 sticks is what i had, just striker is a POS board in my opinion, gave nothing but problems and die too easily.

Hey Pooters,
how did you get on with your new Transcend AxeRam ? :waiting:
I.L.P
07-02-2008, 05:12 PM
it's good for what it's rated at, but doesn't like any higher, more volts or not it's not stable, looks like they're binned right on the ragged edge of what they're capable off.

soo the axe or ballistix? i need to get something that will run on my maximus formula, i cannot get Dominators past 960 (rated at 1066) and at 960 memtest errors out. I was having a play with patriot ram the other day, and could clock it to 1120 no problem, probably higher, but didnt really fiddle too much - as it was rarebits, not mine! Anyone have a maximus formula and some ram running at nice speeds? ideally, i want to push 1200 and not pay for 1200 ram, god damn students.
I.L.P
07-02-2008, 08:13 PM
well the axeram is really cheap for a 1200 kit, not much more than ballistix, but ballistix will clock a bit higher if you're really lucky and wanna risk kiling it with a bit more voltage,
i'd reccomend the axeram though purely because it does 1200 under full warranty.
Margo Baggins
07-02-2008, 08:21 PM
Yeah makes sense really, they weren't my only 2 choices, by all means if anyone can recomend anything else, please do :D
Thanks pooters

looks a bit expensive compared to the axeram that kingston stuff, will be D9GMH though so all the same really apart from speedbinning and price.

yeah - but there is a guy on ebay, selling 1150 hyperx, for £65 delivered :S

Elpida chips - I wouldn't. I was only able to get 1124Mhz out of it, despite it being rated as a 1200 kit.
The thing to remember about RAM kits, is that the 1150 kit and the 1200 kit can have different memory chips on them, therefore giving differing overclockability. Hell, even different revisions of the same kit can have different chips. It's a difficult game to stay on top of, which is why you should look at the date of any reviews to see how relevant they are to today.
If that 1150 kit on ebay has the old heatspreaders then it's likely to have the older, but better, Micron D9GKX's and it would be the better choice.
IMO, Kingston have started to go cheap on their DDR2 and push new DDR3.
