Hi all first post what a site, anyway could one of you help me please.
I can not get past 2.81 on my rig, I'm new to OC so what am I doing wrong, I did buy the lastest Asus 780i mobo, hoping to get past 3.0ghz but with no joy, so took it straight out again.
Please help, throwing money away like water :help::help::help:
Cheers.

What's your hardware, CPU, RAM and CPU cooling?
Hey :) Welcome to BTUK :)
Have you tried dropping the multiplier and raising the FSB by itself to make sure thats not limiting you? :)
An important "feature" of nV 6 and 7 series chipsets are really bloody annoying FSB holes. If you can, try a bigger jump. 340FSB or something. Just make sure your MHz and voltages will still be ok for the settings ;)
Also- G0 chips have mis-calibrated temperature diodes. The mass opinion seems to be to add 15 degrees to whatever temperature you get. ;)

Hi bud thanks.
Most of what you wrote, is past my OC abilty, I'm very new to this could you put it or write it like from A-Z please ??????????
:) Sorry!
IIRC, the 680I displays FSB as (FSBx4), so if you want 300FSB in BIOS, you'd enter 1200.
An FSB hole means the board wont boot at that settings, but will be fine at a higher value.
To test that the FSB isnt completely holding you back, try lowering the multiplier to x8. Then try setting the FSB to 1360. This wont give you a higher CPU speed than you already have, but it means you'll have found out that the FSB is still good for more.
1360 is 340FSB "in the real word" and 340x8 is 2720MHz. Your CPU should be able to handle that at stock voltage. 1.25-1.3V ishhh
The RAM on a 680I can be set to "linked" or "unlinked" Linked means the RAM will be a direct function of the FSB. I cant remember the actual ratio options you'll have, but if you try 4:5 that should be fine (The RAM will be running 425Hz) It should run 4-4-4 2T timings at that speed with 2.1-2.2V (for safety)
What RAM ratio were you running before? Was the RAM running at a safe speed?

quad core + 680i is a notoriously hard to OC combination, ditch that board and get a P35 or an X38. you'll thank yourself for it in the long run.
ignore my advice if you plan to run an SLI setup though.

680i boards are notorious for having a FSB wall at about 340MHz on quads that was only fixed on later revisions.

8Gig of ram won't help. The chipset needs active cooling or the board goes pear shaped.

Haha, novatech no good tye? well you got me here too....
Id ram in that striker II that you just took out, with some water blocks, and it should improve the overclockability of it, as the chipset does get so damn hot. then try upping the NB volts etc until you can get further.

hi..i had this problem. i have the same board but the plus version.
i turned out to be a dodgy bios (803 onwards i think). i flased to 501 and booted straight away at 3ghz although i have had some problems since as the board just doesnt seem to like running a 333 fsb. im currently running a 450 fsb! and it seems to like it
hope this helps

OMFG, are you trying to fill all the exp slots? I have no real advice to add beyond what's been given here already, just to say that the advice is sound, and that it has helped me in the past too.

Hi and welcome to BenchTec! :)
Your rig sounds interesting, I'd like to see some pics especially showing as to how you've worked the copper pipes...
What voltages are you running with?

Thanks I can get 1200 x 9 fsb which on my mobo is 2.70ghz I run it unlinked volts 1.3.
I think at moment I got it at 1200 x 10 2.81ghz will check.
I will go and try now and try some settings, I would love to stay sli, bought 3 x GPU and the 780i mobo, all ready had 2 x GPU just bought other for new 780i mobo.
Will get back ASAP.
And tek hi bud ok mate got those 2 other mobos coming tomorrow.
All I would like is 3ghz but more would be out standing.
And my 680i is a plus !!!!
Thanks to you all, like I said will be back :waiting::waiting:
And please never say sorry buds :)

Tek tried alot of things before I took 780i out with help from johnny.
But all I could get was 2.68 or something like that

That's relatively low volts for a Quad? For the xmas bench session and my Q6700 on air (outside) I was running around 1.65V for 4200MHz - But I was a bit eager.
Some people have been getting great results with the 780i, so it'll be good to see where you can get it to - good luck with it! :)

No I took it out could get nothing at all fsb.
Not sure where to go from here, I realy dont know alot on OC - Volts and so.
I can build spec pc all day, I'm trying to learn about OC so a whil ago bought this spec to set up and learn, but with no joy, can't seem o get anything from it.
I also have a 30inch screen so I needed Sli, but to be honest getting so fed up with pc crashing, sticking and so on.
Do you think I should go for another type of mobo none sli been looking at x38 chip set is that what u all would go for !!!!!, and if so what make and what one ?????
Only reason now that I am writing is because of a laptop.

Go for 1.4-1.45 volts on the core as you're on water, you may need to up the volts on other bits but don't go too mad, just try a couple of extra notches. I've maxed the volts on all the other bits before but it'll crash in about 20mins if you do but that was on a EVGA board.
Don't link your memory, clock that separately, one thing at a time when overclocking until you get a feel for it's limits.
What revision is your board.?

tye, since you're watercooling the the main hardware bar mobo i think it may help to reduce heat. maybe try some fans directly at the northbridge or get some blocks for your striker 2

I would scrap the 680i/nvidea set up and get an x38/ati setup. Once the drivers are sorted out for the 3870x2 in crossfire, that would be amazing on your 30" screen - and the x38 is a much better clocker than the 680i - well, my housemate can clock higher than me and he is on that chipset, but he has faster RAM, none the less he can run 4ghz more stable than me, both using G0 q6600's, but the x38 can handle a 1600fsb, where as i think that is in the middle of one of the big old holes on the 680i - but they seem to change with each bios revision. IF you can afford to sellup and get a x38/ATI set up, i would.

And Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory, do you think that mem is ok, that's why I only have 2G coming ?????
I will have here then 5 bloody mobos, was going to try Evga 680i is it worth taking out of box and try ????:D:D:D

What? stop spending... just wait.. didnt you just order a maximus formula as well?
if im correct you have
Asus striker II
asus p5n32-E sli thing
Evga
Maximus formula
Maximus extreme...
ARGH!!!! If this gets much worse you really should get it pre-built as i think you are cursed with overclocking :(
come on msn....
